Entre catalogage, conservation et d\u00e9couvrabilit\u00e9 des \u0153uvres, retours sur les enjeux de ce chantier in\u00e9dit.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Within the walls of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnf.fr\/fr\">BnF<\/a>, out of public view, lie the collections gathered through legal deposit. Legal deposit is a statutory requirement imposed on all publishers. \u201cPrinted, graphic, photographic, sound, audiovisual, and multimedia documents, regardless of their technical process of production, publication, or distribution, are subject to mandatory deposit, known as legal deposit, once they are made available to the public,\u201d states the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/codes\/section_lc\/LEGITEXT000006074236\/LEGISCTA000006144103\/#LEGISCTA000006144103\">French Heritage Code<\/a>. Since 2021, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vie-publique.fr\/loi\/281850-loi-darcos-30-decembre-2021-prix-frais-de-port-livres-librairies\">Darcos law<\/a> has reinforced this definition, notably by explicitly including digital materials.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Collecting in a Moving Landscape<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>One of the primary objectives of legal deposit is preservation and cataloging. In the fast-shifting landscape of XR\u2014where hardware platforms and technical standards evolve constantly\u2014the task is particularly complex. \u201cPreservation thrives on stability,\u201d acknowledges \u00c9lodie Bertrand, coordinator of multimedia legal deposit at the BnF. \u201cWhat is most challenging, but also most exciting, is that we are working in fields defined by constant innovation. There can be a gap between the formats for which we are beginning to establish deposit procedures and the reality on the ground. By the time we find solutions, new devices have already emerged. The challenge is to determine which formats we can accept, and for which we can guarantee long-term preservation and access.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>The institution is acutely aware of the importance of archiving these inherently fragile works. Bertrand points to the era of web documentaries as a cautionary tale. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, studios operated under tight production schedules and economic pressure, leaving little time to consider archiving. When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/pixels\/article\/2017\/07\/26\/l-inevitable-disparition-de-flash-player-ancien-logiciel-phare-du-web_5165176_4408996.html\">Flash disappeared<\/a>, the primary playback infrastructure for these hybrid formats collapsed. \u201cMany of those works were lost,\u201d Bertrand laments.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Toward Greater Granularity<br\/><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>For publishers, compliance with legal deposit requirements conditions access to certain forms of financial support from the Centre national du cin\u00e9ma et de l&#8217;image anim\u00e9e (CNC). Yet fitting immersive works into existing categories is not always straightforward. One objective of the platform\u2019s evolution is therefore to streamline procedures. As Bertrand explains, there is currently a single form covering all multimedia documents, originally designed with physical media in mind. Moreover, \u201csome publishers produce several types of documents, so it made sense to create a single access <a href=\"https:\/\/depotlegal.bnf.fr\/login.do\">portal<\/a>,\u201d she notes. The challenge is to strike a balance. \u201cFor some stakeholders, the form already feels burdensome, while others would like to go into much greater detail,\u201d Bertrand observes. \u201cWe have to find a way to satisfy those who want more specificity without overwhelming those who already find the process too complex.\u201d Adding to the difficulty, the mandatory information required in a legal deposit declaration is set by ministerial decree.      <\/p>\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Webinar : Obligation de d\u00e9p\u00f4t l\u00e9gal pour les jeux vid\u00e9o \u00e0 partir de 2026\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RVvWbzQUWyE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>In consultation with industry representatives\u2014including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pxn.fr\/\">PXN<\/a> association of digital experience producers\u2014the BnF chose to broaden the range of professional roles that can be credited, incorporating functions specific to multimedia creation that had not previously been recognized within the legal deposit framework: game narrative designer, 3D animator, and others. Pending the rollout of a new interface, depositors who wish to provide more detailed creative credits have been encouraged to use the comment field. The compromise aims \u201cto move beyond the limited list of predefined roles without confronting depositors with an excessively long and potentially discouraging dropdown menu,\u201d Bertrand explains. Publishers are also now allowed to submit supplementary materials that shed light on a work\u2019s context: scripts, explanatory videos outlining the user journey, installation manuals, or accessibility specifications. For the most complex projects\u2014those difficult to reconcile with the legal deposit framework\u2014the BnF has worked with the CNC to provide certificates waiving the deposit obligation. The BnF\u2019s platform, initially developed in the early 2010s, is expected to undergo further updates in the near future.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Archiving as a Strategic Imperative for the Creative Industries<br\/><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>If XR stakeholders are eager to document their works in detail at the time of deposit, it is because they see the process as an archival opportunity. \u201cWhat can we pass on to researchers and digital art students that will help them understand and properly contextualize our work?\u201d asks Fran\u00e7ois Klein, co-founder and president of <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-rise.com\/\">Digital Rise<\/a>, an immersive content production company and member of PXN. \u201cIf, five years from now, a PhD candidate writes a dissertation on the evolution of audience engagement in digital experiences, how will they access our work in order to understand the authors\u2019 creative approach and underlying mechanisms?\u201d Marc Lopato, co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/diversionxr.com\/\">Diversion<\/a>, an agency specializing in immersive installations and events, shares this perspective. As service providers and distributors, Diversion\u2019s teams encounter a wide range of immersive works. \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that creators themselves don\u2019t have access to these works\u2014to understand the history of virtual reality, but also to know what has already been done, what worked, and what didn\u2019t. There\u2019s real value there for the future of the industry.\u201d Diversion has built a database of several hundred works but has not yet found the time\u2014or funding\u2014to make it publicly accessible. \u201cThese are important initiatives we would like to pursue, but we are a small company operating within a very fragile business model.\u201d<br\/>     \u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Bertrand echoes this archival imperative. \u201cThat is precisely the role of legal deposit, as stated in the very first article of the Heritage Code concerning legal deposit (Article L131-1): \u2018legal deposit is organized in order to enable the collection and preservation of documents,\u2019 as well as their \u2018consultation.\u2019 We are fully aware that these works are of interest not only to researchers but also to professionals, and we are striving to provide them with the means to write\u2014and to understand\u2014their history.\u201d<br\/> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-signature\">Elsa Ferreira <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>La BnF, en partenariat avec plusieurs acteurs de la XR, exp\u00e9rimente le d\u00e9p\u00f4t l\u00e9gal des \u0153uvres en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 \u00e9tendue.
